Step 1: Preparation.
What you'll need to get started:
- Microwave: Standard (non-convection) for heating water.
- Microwave-safe coffee mug.
- Clock or timer.
- Spoon to place and remove the night guard from hot water.
- Non-metallic object, such as a small wooden spoon, chopsticks, or a popsicle stick, to prevent overheating the water.
- Small plate to place the dental guard on to cool before fitting.
- Mirror to assist with the fitting process.
Step 2: Heating.
- Fill the coffee mug halfway with tap water.
- Place the night guard into the water using a non-metallic object like a small wooden spoon, chopsticks, or a popsicle stick.
- Microwave the mug with water and the night guard for 3 minutes. Let it sit for 30 seconds before removing the mug from the microwave.
- Use a spoon to take the night guard out of the hot water.
- Immediately place the NightGuard® "face down" (grooved side down) in the hot water for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, use the spoon to remove it from the water.
- Place The Doctor’s NightGuard® on a plate, sticky side up. Let it cool for ten seconds, then proceed with fitting.
Step 3: Fitting.
1. Bite Firmly.
Using a mirror for assistance, place the night guard in your mouth. Ensure that your front teeth are slightly behind the front edge of the guard. Bite down firmly.
Sink your teeth as far into the soft material as possible. Avoid pushing it forward while biting.
2. Molding the Exterior.
While keeping your teeth clenched, use your fingers to press the soft material tightly along the outside of your teeth and around your mouth.
Push the material sideways into your teeth, not upwards. This step is crucial for a proper fit.
3. Molding the Interior.
Open your mouth and use your fingers to press the soft material tightly along the inside of your teeth and around your mouth.
Once the material has been pressed against the sides of your teeth, continue biting down with effort for at least 30 seconds.
