The oil is pleasant, absorbs well, and is truly waterproof. However, it is more suitable for tanning rather than protection. I am not fair-skinned, and I wasn't in the south, but I got a bit sunburned even though I didn't lie in the sun. I simply walked around the area, occasionally stepping into sunny spots. Different products are needed for the south.
