Coconut oil is derived from the fruits of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), a species native to the tropics. The outer fibrous husk and the inner shell of the coconut seed are removed to reveal the delicious white flesh. The coconut kernel, or copra, is dried and used to produce oil (after pressing and purification) since it contains about 65% fat.
Pure coconut oil is unique in that it has the consistency of butter at temperatures below 25°C, above which it softens and becomes oil. Rich in saturated fatty acids with a medium chain length, such as caprylic, capric, and lauric acids, it has a soothing and softening effect and helps make dry skin elastic and firm. It also acts as a moderate antiseptic due to the presence of lauric acid. Coconut oil, like the entire range of Sapone di un Tempo cosmetic oils, can be mixed with other oils for more specific results or to address particular issues.
